Memorial Day weekend, we headed up to Maggie Valley to stay with Jamie's mom. We had fun visiting and working around the yard. Sunday afternoon, we headed out on an adventure. We drove up through Cherokee, NC and went to the visitor center for The Smoky Mountain National Forest. They have a nice visitor center, but they also have an old farm where people can go and see what it was like back in olden times. It is all right beside a beautiful river.
Everyone had to take turns sitting against the tree.
They had an old farm house, chicken coops, meat house, apple house, barns, etc. This is the apple house.
Jamie showed them an old cane mill. He was explaining how they got the juice out of the cane. When we first were married, he helped Daddy grind cane a time or two. The first time, he was able to ride the golf cart round and round and round while it turned the cane press. Thankfully Daddy finally got an electric cane so that Jamie didn't have to get dizzy anymore. : )
The girls were practicing plowing in case Papa wants them to work in the garden. My daddy used to always plow with plows like this behind a mule.
Eli wanted to get in on the action.
This was a huge tree that had been cut down. The kids look so tiny standing on it's trunk.
We then rode a half of a mile up the road to an old grist mill. The kids thought it was cool because it was run by water. They are used to seeing Papa grind corn into grits and cornmeal with an electric motor, so it was neat seeing the old fashioned way.
It was a very nice weekend in the mountains.
