Guys and Dolls

A few weeks ago, Eli had the opportunity to attend Drama Camp. This was a camp held down in Barnwell and he was able to spend the week with his Nana. Two of our nieces also attended drama camp with Eli. They have both attended for a few years now. The drama camp ran from Monday until Friday from 9-4 every day. They learned techniques in acting and worked on a musical. The main roles had been handed out prior to camp so that the older kids who were given the main roles and songs could work on them. The younger kids were given parts when camp started.
The musical that was performed for the week was "Guys and Dolls." I had never seen it before, but Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra were in it years ago. It is about a group of gamblers who are trying to find a place for a craps game. One of these gamblers is also bet that he can't take one "doll" to Havana with him. The "doll" that they chose for him to take is one of the main people that runs a mission for sinners in New York City. It was a pretty cute little story.
Eli was given the role of Society Max. He was originally just going to be one of the guys who was trying to get in on the craps game, but after a short while, they realized his potential and also gave him the role of a blind con man. I was told that they actually wrote this part in for him.
Nana was great with him that week and made sure he had just the right clothes for the part. She would go to camp with him each day and made sure he settled in. He was the youngest person at camp so he was a little unsure some days. He did love it, though. He told us on the phone that it was the only place he really fit in. Everyone knew him.
The performed the musical on Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening, and Sunday afternoon. Mama, Daddy, Hannah, Jennifer, and Logan went down on Friday evening to watch his performance. They loved it! They said wonderful things about Eli and his performance. I could hardly wait to get there and see it myself.
Saturday, we picked up Jamie from work and headed straight down to Barnwell. Jamie and the girls dropped me off at the theater and I was able to watch the performance Saturday night. I was floored at how well he did! I couldn't believe how into his role he was. He never missed a beat! I laughed and laughed and was so proud of him! He was just so into his character. He followed along with the others in the dance numbers and he knew the words to the songs too. As we left that night, so many people stopped him to tell him how good he was. He really did steal the show!
Sunday afternoon, Jamie and the girls attended the last performance with me. The girls were just mesmerized during the whole performance. They loved it too! Jamie was so proud of Eli! The next week, the only songs you heard around the house were from "Guys and Dolls." We even checked out the original movie from the library and watched it.
Eli is very excited about going again next summer and Katie can't wait until she's old enough to attend Drama camp.
Katie and his two cousins after the performance.
The whole cast. Eli was the youngest and the oldest was a high school senior.

So cute! I wish we lived close enough to come watch him. It sounds like he did a fantastic job!
