Edisto Beach 2014

On August 4th, we headed to Edisto Beach for a week with Jamie's family.  We had so much fun!
That first night, we just settled in since we didn't make it until almost dark.
Tuesday morning, we got up late and slowly made our way to the beach.  We went to the "little waves" beach--it's the one around the point of the island that doesn't have very rough waves.  When it is high tide, there is hardly any beach--like enough room for 2 people to pass one another walking.  So, we took advantage of low tide each day.  The kids played and played!  My friend, Stacy was there with her family so she and her little boy, Jack, came and played for a little while.  He and LL are in the same primary class at church.
Wednesday we headed to the little wave beach again for a few hours.  Everyone ended up coming to the beach that day and having fun in the water.

At Edisto, we always see dolphins in the water.  We saw a group of dolphin out in the water and so everyone just sat with their boogie boards waiting to see them again.

At  the house we stayed at, there is a pond behind it bordering the golf course.  One day, my sister-in-law was sitting on the screened porch and heard something.  She looked and there was an alligator swimming right in front of the house.  The kids thought it was cool and I'm glad we saw it so the little ones knew they couldn't go out without adults anymore.
On Thursday, instead of heading to the beach, we headed to the dock.  Uncle Chris had set up crab lines for all of the children to crab with.  Although we didn't catch a lot of crabs, everyone had fun hanging out on the dock.

My nephew, Cal, loved checking the lines.

Uncle Chris just enjoyed watching everyone and doing a little fishing of his own.
Eli was the "net" guy.  He was lounging on the ramp until someone yelled, "Crab!"
Finally there was as crab on the line and they caught it.

The best part of the day was seeing two porpoises come close to the dock.  They were under the dock next to us rounding up some fish for their lunch.  The kids all sat on the edge of the dock to see when they would come up next.

We had hoped to take a ride through the creeks on the boat, but the motor was acting up, so they just sat there and pretended to be on a ride.
 Our beautiful niece, Olivia.
Uncle Chris had to take all of our catches off of the hook.  Unfortunately, we caught a few stingray and he had to keep throwing them back.
Cal had been trying to catch a fish since he got there on Monday and he finally caught a nice fish.
 Maddie only hooked a stingray.
Jamie enjoyed some fishing time.  (Doesn't he look so handsome!  : )
Eli tried and tried to catch a fish but no luck until we got back to the house.
Most of the girls went back with Missy to the house.  I convinced Laura Lynn to stay with us for a little longer.  Jamie got out the cast net and tried to catch something.  He mainly caught small fish that had to be thrown back, but he had fun.  Laura Lynn was good at throwing the fish back.  She is not afraid of touching anything!
 Beautiful Cast!
Thursday night Jacie, our little 16 year old cousin from Hilton Head, came to stay with us for a few days.  She is great with the kids!  We made cinnamon rolls late that night to have Friday morning.  We stayed up way late talking and laughing and cooking.
Friday morning we got up and Jacie and my kids and I headed to the little wave beach for about an hour.  We then got showered and dressed to head to Beaufort for the afternoon.  We went to St. Helena Island to look at a house that my sister-in-law was interested in seeing.  We left there and ate seafood at "BoonDocks".  It was yummy!  We then drove back through Beaufort and went to the chocolate store and then rented a movie from the Red Box for that night back on Edisto Island.  Jacie rode back with us and she and Eli had some funny conversations.  My favorite was when Eli asked her what kind of water she preferred.  Her answer, "Lake."  His answer, "Tap."  Silly boy!

Saturday we got up and headed to Botany Bay.  This is where I took one of my favorite pictures of my kids a few years ago walking down the road with the live oaks hanging over the road.  The coolest part about Botany Bay is that you park your car and then walk 1/2 mile to the beach.  There are trees on the beach and tons of shells because people are not supposed to collect them and take them off of the beach.  Once we got to the beach, we walked another 1/2 mile to 1 mile to the end of the island where we swam in the inlet.  It was low tide, so the kids could swim over, walk across the sandbar, and then come and jump back in on the other side of the inlet.  It was a great day.  We spent lots of hours in the water, looking at the beautiful shells, and of course--fishing!

Jamie gave himself a mud bath.

Jamie's favorite part of the day was floating down the inlet with his Diet Mountain Dew beside him.  Look at that grin!

Finally, we heard thunder and knew we had to start heading back because we had at least a 30 minute walk to the car.
We had to stop and take a picture on the dead trees with all of the kids.
 Amazing shells everywhere.

We got to the car in time to miss the storm.  We had only been in the car about 15 minutes when it started pouring.

Sunday we just hung out and relaxed.  Jamie went with Chris to take the boat from the dock to the boat ramp.  Because of the motor problem, it took them a few hours, so Jamie missed out on the beach our last day.  We, however, headed to the "big wave" beach.  Unfortunately for the kids, it was low tide and the waves were not very big after all.  They had fun playing, though.

They started covering Aunt Ronda with sand and before long....
 ...everyone was helping.
They even gave her some female parts with shells on top.  : )
It started thundering again and so we had to head back to the house.  But not before we went and had shaved ice.
Monday we had to pack up and leave.  It poured down rain while we packed, but thank goodness, the rain quit for our ride home.  It was a great week with our family and we look forward to our next trip with them all!
